Just as she did in Clementine, Sonia Purnell uncovers the captivating story of a powerful, influential, yet shockingly overlooked heroine of the Second World War. Virginia Hall was one of the greatest spies in American history, yet her story remains untold. This spy was Virginia Hall, a young American woman-rejected from the foreign service because of her gender and her prosthetic leg-who talked her way into the spy organization deemed Churchill's "ministry of ungentlemanly warfare," and, before the United States had even entered the war, became the first woman to deploy to occupied France. In 1942, the Gestapo sent out an urgent transmission: "She is the most dangerous of all Allied spies. Again, this is a good conversation starter, as parents can ask direct questions or children can say, "I don't like it when Ms._ hugs me." Another nice touch is the way that we see children's families respecting what they are and are not comfortable with it's only non-family adults who seem to be overstepping boundaries. The illustrations are bright and clear, with no obviously gendered children. It's a good jumping-off point for children to say what they do and don't feel comfortable with. Please Don't Give Me a Hugis fairly understated, but it absolutely makes its point, and the lack of over-writing means that parents and children (or teachers and students) can discuss what it means for specific kids. For many of us raised that it was not "polite" to tell an adult that we didn't want to be hugged or kissed, there was a real need for a book to tell us that our feelings weren't "impolite," but valid expressions of body autonomy. One of the approaches we take in my creative writing class about writing for children is to look at the books we needed to read when we were little. It's Friday! Woot! Have a wonderful weekend.īreaking a goblin's curse is more difficult than Clover thought. This is a huge improvement over last year when I wanted to nap five days of the week because I was so tired. I've only had to have one nap this month. Yet I get a B+ for relaxing before bed and going to sleep at a reasonable hour. I get an A+ for revising, but only a D for managing to balance writing and networking. I'm doing all right for my goals this year. I have to keep reminding myself he's just 3.ĥ. A genius! Then later in the day he threw a fit to take down the bathroom because the ice cubes I gave him to play with in the tub were melting. The other day my husband was playing Flow on his iPhone and the boy wanted to give it a try. Why do I feel so nervous? I know my son is smart, sweet, and well mannered. I have a parent-teacher conference this morning. If I have no luck there, I'll make a list and start sending queries out in small groups.Ĥ. I have a specific publisher in mind that I want to try first. Oh! That reminds me: thank you to all of you who left tips on my Wednesday post about querying. I can't count it as one of the short stories for my goals this year. I sent my short story for the Untethered Realms anthology to be revised. Best I get started on the revisions for my superhero WIP.Ģ. Is anyone done reading yet?! Waiting is the hardest part. Yay! Right on schedule with my goals for this year. Known as the “Grand Dame of gay rights,” Edie was a bombshell in every way: bitingly smart (she was one of IBM’s first engineers), glamorous and hilariously foul-mouthed until her last breath (she often wore a shirt that read “No One Knows I’m a Lesbian.”) She was a larger-than-life character known for her unapologetic sexual appetite and outrageous parties (often attended by friends Lorraine Hansberry and Larry Kramer.) But most of all, for her extraordinary, decades-long love with partner Thea Spyer that resulted in the Supreme Court decision we all know to this day.” Per the logline: “Edie’s remarkable story changed history, but she was far from a traditional hero, and this series will be anything but your stuffy biopic. Parul Agrawal Named Head Of Drama At Warner Bros. Smooth Talking Stranger is the third book in Lisa Kleypas’s Travis series, a family saga that’s part romance, part women’s fiction. In sum, a delightful and sexy romance and I'm looking forward to listening to Joe's book soon. Of course, Renee Raudman (the narrator of book #2) is a hard act to follow. My one small nitpick is that the audiobook narrator, Emily Durante, doesn't have the best Texas accent. Their chemistry is off the charts and their banter is a highlight of the book. She doesn't just fall all over Jack, but makes him work hard to win her love. Ella is a lovely heroine with a great sense of humor. Jack is one seriously gorgeous and HOT alpha, so that fact that he just melts for Ella and baby Luke makes the romance all the sweeter. While Sugar Daddy was more a coming of age women's fiction type novel and Blue Eyed Devil focused on some dramatic and angsty issues, Smooth Talking Stranger is straight contemporary romance. This is definitely the best installment in the series so far. She decides to confront the most likely candidate, Jack Travis, who is both surprised and nonplussed to realize that the quirky, no-nonsense Ella might just be the woman of his dreams. When Ella Varner's sister deserts her newborn, Ella is determined to find the baby's father and force him to take responsibility. Six Frigates: The Epic History of the Founding of the U. Would a navy protect American commerce against the Mediterranean pirates, or drain the treasury and provoke hostilities with the great powers? The foundersparticularly Jefferson, Madison, and Adamsdebated these questions fiercely and switched sides more than once. When I saw it at a preview screening outside Boston, I was struck by the difference between reading the book and experiencing it in a crowded theater. Now, decades later, another once-taboo Judy Blume book, Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret, is hitting theaters in movie form. We passed the slender volume around, girl to girl to girl, fully aware that the adults wouldn’t approve - and also, that they couldn’t stop us. It was a story about teenagers and sexual discovery, and our friend knew precisely which pages, deep in the book, contained the passages we really wanted to read. But at recess, she led a few of us down a grassy hill, out of sight of the playground, and lifted the cover to reveal a secret: She had taken a razor blade to the pages and carved out just enough space to fit a paperback copy of Blume’s 1975 novel, Forever. A classmate came to school one day with a hardcover version of Grimm’s Fairy Tales. I was in fifth grade, longer ago than I care to say, when I first discovered the exquisite power of a Judy Blume book. While social media is an incredible way to connect and build community, moments like this only create extreme division instead of bringing people together. The last few weeks have been very hard for everyone involved and millions of people are seeing so much hate around this, which is extremely harmful. Hailey shared: I want to thank Selena for speaking out, as her and I have been discussing the last few weeks how to move past this ongoing narrative between her and I. Hailey thanked Gomez and wrote that everyone could stand to be kinder online. In her own earlier statement, Gomez had revealed that Hailey received death threats and asked fans to stop the bullying. Hailey previously touched a little on how she has privately been doing when she shared a statement about the TikTok discourse.
